Charleston’s City Tourism Ordinance allows up to 20 people per tour, but Walking Charleston tours are limited to 12 so that everyone receives personalized attention. Guests are encouraged to ask questions about tour topics, local attractions, places to eat, and more. Skip is an open book and always happy to share recommendations about things to do and see in Charleston.

A Stroll Through History

 

Let your imagination wander through America’s largest historic district. See homes and buildings unchanged by time, and learn more about their varied architectural styles. Follow the history of the colony of Carolina and the evolution of Charlestowne from its settlement in 1670 until present day. Learn more about the people and events that shaped the Holy City, and hear about some of Skip’s humorous childhood experiences on Meeting Street.

A Stroll Through History departs from Washington Square Park behind City Hall on Broad Street.
Tours run Tuesday – Sunday, with each covering up to 1.5 miles and lasting about an hour and 45 minutes.

CHARLESTON’S ONLY CIVIL WAR & SLAVERY TOUR

 

Revisit the greatest tragedy in American history as a nation turned on itself. Examine the institution of slavery, the primary cause of The Civil War, and follow the events that led to our nation splitting asunder in 1860. Discover what life was like for Charlestonians, both enslaved and free, during that tumultuous time. Learn more about the escalation of conflict, the aftermath of war, 20th century tensions, and comparable current events. A House Divided is Charleston’s only walking tour devoted to Civil War history and the Institution of Slavery. In addition to historical accounts, A House Divided incorporates some of Skip’s personal memories of the civil rights movement and the integration of local schools.

This unique and entertaining tour is a gentle walk through Charleston’s Old and Historic District that is designed for the young and the “Young at Heart”. It is an engaging addition to your Charleston family vacation. You will learn about pirates, see the waterfront where the ships were docked, and visit the famous Pineapple Fountain. You will find out what it was like to be a young person in Old Charleston as well as learn how that changed during the momentous 19th and 20th Centuries. You will also hear about kids who have accomplished amazing things during Charleston’s history.
