Walking Charleston

ABOUT

Engaging, Entertaining & Uniquely Local Walking Tours

Did you know that Charleston’s City Tourism Ordinance allows 20 people per tour? That’s a crowd! Walking Charleston tours have a capacity of 12 so that everyone has ample time and space to make friends, ask questions, enjoy the scenery, and learn a little something along the way. Tours are led by Charleston native and Certified Licensed City Tour Guide, Skip Evans, and they feature a uniquely local perspective on Holy City history and culture.

Skip Evans is one of five generations born and raised in Charleston, SC. He is one of four generations to graduate from The Citadel (Class of 1970). After graduation, Skip became a high school history teacher. He later traveled the world as a United States Air Force Pilot and commercial airline Captain. Skip served as an Instructor Pilot and Flight Simulator Instructor while in the Air Force. In retirement he serves as an adjunct professor for Trident Technical College. That position has afforded Skip the unique pleasure of sharing his 35 years of cockpit experience with new employees at Boeing SC as part of their employee orientation program.

Skip’s family has served as Commissioned Officers in every US conflict from the current action in the Middle East back to the Revolutionary War. Predictably Skip has a profound interest in American history. He spends 6 days a week giving tours and conducts research in his spare time—reading at home with his wife of more than 44 years and walking the historic district with his beloved coon dog, Kate.

As a member of the Historic Charleston Foundation, the South Carolina Historical Society, and the Charleston Tour Association, it is safe to say that Skip knows a lot, but he doesn’t know everything. If he doesn’t know something, he is certainly committed to finding the answer. Skip isn’t big on speculation. Separating historical facts from Charleston’s most prolific legends is a major component of his most popular tours, A Stroll Through History and A House Divided.
